What smile makeovers can help with

  • Crowded or uneven teeth
  • Dull or stained teeth
  • Chips, wear or gaps
  • Old fillings, crowns or veneers that no longer match

“As a cosmetic dentist in a county driven by aesthetics, I know the trend today is for a more natural-looking smile with the minimum amount of dentistry,” says Dr Basrai. “I call it the ABC of Dentistry.”

Earlier generations of makeovers often relied on veneers or removable snap-on smiles. Today, many people can get the look they want with less dentistry, and where veneers or crowns are needed, they are planned as part of the whole smile.

How it works

  1. Consultation. We listen to what you would like to change and check your teeth and gums. This is a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).
  2. Your plan. We put together a step-by-step plan with clear fees in writing. This might be aligners, then whitening, then bonding, or a different combination.
  3. Treatment. Each stage is carried out at our practice, with time to review your smile between stages.

Smile Makeovers: your questions answered

How much does a smile makeover cost?

It depends entirely on which treatments are in your plan. Your dentist confirms the fee for each stage in writing after your consultation. Many plans are done in stages, and each stage has its own fee, so you can see clearly what is included. You can take the plan away and decide in your own time, with no pressure on the day.

Is the consultation free?

Yes. We offer a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded). At the consultation your dentist asks what you would like to change, checks your teeth and gums and explains which treatments could help and in what order. You leave with a written plan and fee before anything starts.

What is the ABC of Dentistry?

It is Dr Basrai’s name for a conservative approach: Alignment with clear aligners, Bleaching (whitening) and Composite bonding, used before more invasive options. The idea is to keep as much natural tooth as possible. Straightening first can make whitening and bonding more effective, and in many cases means veneers or crowns are not needed at all.

How long does a smile makeover take?

Anything from a few weeks to many months, depending on whether straightening is involved. You will have a timeline before you start. Whitening and bonding alone can take a few weeks, while plans that include clear aligners usually take longer. Your dentist explains each stage so you know what to expect and when.

Can I have a makeover in time for a wedding or event?

Tell us your date at your consultation. We will tell you honestly what is realistic in the time available. If time is short, whitening or bonding may be possible, while straightening usually needs longer. It helps to get in touch several months before an important date so there is time to plan properly.

Do you still offer snap-on smiles?

Removable snap-on style smiles are one option, but today we usually suggest aligners, whitening and bonding first. Ask at your consultation if you are interested in a removable option. Removable options can be useful in some situations, and your dentist will explain how they compare with fixed treatments.

Will my new smile look natural?

Our aim is a natural-looking result that suits your face. Your dentist will show you the plan and discuss shade and shape with you. You can bring photos of smiles you like. The aim is to keep your smile looking like yours, with the shape and shade planned to suit your face and the teeth around them.

Can I send photos first?

Yes. You can send a photo of your smile on WhatsApp before you come in. A photo is not a substitute for an examination, but it helps us prepare. Front and side photos taken in daylight are most helpful. We may reply with an idea of the options and suggest a consultation.

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is a plan that combines treatments to improve how your smile looks, such as straightening, whitening and bonding or veneers. It is built around your goals, your face and the health of your teeth and gums. The plan is set out in writing before anything starts.

Where do I start?

Start with a consultation. We talk about what you would like to change, check your teeth and gums, take photos and explain the options in a sensible order. You receive a written plan and fee before anything starts. There is no obligation to book treatment.

What order are treatments usually done in?

A common sequence is health first, then alignment, then colour, then shape. For example: check-up and hygiene, aligners, whitening, then bonding or veneers. Your dentist will explain the order that suits your plan. Getting the order right helps each step support the next one.

Can I spread a makeover over time?

Yes. Many people complete their plan in stages. Your dentist can set out which steps make sense to do first, so each stage works towards the final result. This can make it easier to plan around work, family events or budget, and you can pause between stages.

Will I see a preview of my new smile?

Digital scans and photos help us plan and show you the expected changes, for example a 3D plan for aligners. Your dentist will explain what preview is available for your treatment. Previews are a guide, and real results depend on your teeth and how you respond to treatment.

Can a makeover help if I have missing teeth?

Yes, replacing missing teeth can be part of the plan, using bridges, dentures or, where suitable, implants placed by a trusted implant clinician we arrange. We explain the options at your consultation. Implants are not placed at our practice. Bridges and dentures are provided here, and we explain how each option fits into the rest of your plan.

Is a smile makeover painful?

Most cosmetic treatments involve little discomfort, and local anaesthetic is used where needed. Your dentist will explain what each step involves. Some people notice short-term sensitivity after whitening or aching after new aligners. If you are nervous, tell us when you book and we will go at your pace.

How long do the results last?

That depends on the treatments in your plan and how you look after your teeth. Retainers, good cleaning and regular check-ups all help. Your dentist will explain the upkeep for each part of your plan. Night guards may be suggested if you grind.

I live in Billericay or Basildon. Is it worth the trip?

That is your call. We put your plan, number of visits and fees in writing after your consultation so you can decide. We are on Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays RM16 6SE, with on-site parking outside, about 0.8 miles from Chafford Hundred station and 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30.

Can I book a Saturday consultation?

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp and we will look for a time. Saturday slots are limited, so it helps to ask early. Weekday appointments are also available from 8am, which can suit people who want to be seen before work.

Who carries out the treatment?

Dr Jagmail (Dave) Basrai, LDS RCS (Eng) 1994, GDC 70304, leads cosmetic treatment at the practice. You will meet him at your consultation. He has trained in smile design with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and he will explain each part of your plan in plain language before anything starts.

Do I have to commit at the first visit?

No. You leave with a written plan and fee, and you can take your time to decide. There is no pressure to book treatment on the day. Many people like to discuss the plan with family before deciding. You can message us on WhatsApp with any questions afterwards.

Is a smile makeover only for big changes?

No. A makeover can be as simple as whitening followed by bonding on a few edges. It's any plan that combines treatments to reach the smile you'd like.

Can clear aligners be part of my makeover?

Yes. Alignment is the 'A' in Dr Basrai's ABC approach. Chafford Aligners is from £1,995, and Smile Tweak is £995 for minor cases on one arch.

Do I have to have veneers?

No. Many people get the look they want with aligners, whitening and bonding. Where veneers or crowns are needed, they're planned as part of the whole smile.

Can old crowns or veneers be updated as part of a makeover?

Yes. Old crowns, veneers or fillings that no longer match can be replaced so the whole smile looks even.

Will I get a written plan?

Yes. Your plan sets out each stage, the order and the fees in writing, so you can decide in your own time.

Can I have whitening and bonding without aligners?

Yes, if your teeth are already well aligned. Your dentist will tell you honestly whether straightening first would help.

What is smile design?

Planning the shape, length, shade and proportions of your teeth so they suit your face. Dr Basrai has trained in smile design with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

How do I look after my smile after a makeover?

Regular check-ups and cleaning, wearing any retainers as directed after aligners, and a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Can I have a makeover if I grind my teeth?

Often yes, but grinding needs planning for, because it can wear or chip new work. Dr Basrai can assess your bite first.

I live in Grays or Chafford Hundred. Can I fit the stages around work?

Yes. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (closed for lunch 1pm to 2pm), and Saturday by appointment, with on-site parking about a mile from Grays. Start with a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit secures your slot, and it's taken off your treatment or refunded).
