What dentures can help with
- Several or all teeth missing
- Old dentures that feel loose or look worn
- Partial dentures that pinch or rub
- Wanting a more natural-looking smile with a denture
There are three main types of denture to talk through: conventional, cosmetic and flexible. Flexible partial dentures are made from a softer material that can feel more comfortable than rigid plates for some people.
Whichever type you choose, the aim is a denture that looks natural and fits your face.

AI-generatedHow it works
- Assessment. We check your mouth and any existing dentures and talk about how you want your teeth to look and feel.
- Impressions and design. Detailed impressions and measurements are taken so the denture is made around you.
- Try-in. You see and try your new teeth before they are finished, so changes can be made.
- Fit and review. Your denture is fitted and we review it, as small adjustments are normal in the first weeks.
Dentures: your questions answered
How much do dentures cost?
The fee depends on the type of denture and how many teeth it replaces. You receive a written fee after your assessment. The fee covers the appointments needed to design and fit your denture, and your dentist will explain what is included. Fees are confirmed in writing before anything starts, so there are no surprises later.
What is the Changing Faces denture service?
Changing Faces provides a bespoke denture service within our practice, so your denture is designed and fitted at Chafford Hundred Dental Care. This means you can have your assessment, try-in and fitting in one place, with time to discuss the look and feel of your denture at each step.
What are flexible dentures?
Flexible partial dentures are made from a softer material instead of rigid acrylic or metal. Some people find them more comfortable. Your dentist will tell you if they suit your mouth. Flexible dentures can blend with the gums and avoid metal clasps, but they are not suitable for everyone and can be harder to adjust later.
My denture is loose. Can you help?
Yes. A loose denture can sometimes be relined or adjusted, or it may be time for a new one. Bring it to your appointment. A loose denture can rub the gums or make eating harder, so it is worth having it checked. We will explain whether a reline, an adjustment or a new denture makes more sense.
How long does it take to make a denture?
Usually several appointments over a few weeks, including a try-in. We will give you a timeline at your assessment. The number of visits depends on the type of denture and whether teeth need to be removed first. You see and approve the look at the try-in before your denture is finished.
Will my denture look natural?
We choose the shape, size and shade of the teeth with you, and you see them at the try-in before they are finished. The aim is a denture that suits your face and looks natural when you speak and smile. You can bring a photo of your old smile if you would like us to use it as a guide.
Can implants help hold my denture in?
Implants can be used to support a denture. Ask about this at your assessment if you would like a firmer fit. Implants can help some people who struggle with a loose lower denture. Implants are not placed at our practice; if this is an option, we explain the steps and arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician.
Do I still need check-ups with dentures?
Yes. Your gums and any remaining teeth still need checking, and dentures need reviewing as your mouth changes over time. Checking the soft tissues of the mouth is part of a thorough examination. Dentures may need relining or remaking over the years as the gums and bone change shape.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
It takes some practice. Start with softer foods cut into small pieces, and your dentist will give you tips at your fitting. Chewing on both sides at once can help the denture stay steady. Your mouth may feel sore at first; if a sore spot does not settle, contact us so we can adjust the denture.
How do I clean my dentures?
Clean them daily with a brush and a denture cleaner, and take them out at night unless your dentist advises otherwise. Rinse your denture after meals and clean over a bowl of water or a towel in case you drop it. Avoid hot water and household cleaners, which can damage the material.
How long do dentures last?
Dentures wear over time, and the mouth changes shape as the gums and bone shrink, so most need relining, adjusting or replacing every few years. Regular checks let us spot when a denture no longer fits as it should. Bring your old denture to check-ups.
Can a denture be relined instead of replaced?
Often yes. A reline adds new material to the fitting surface so the denture sits more closely. Whether a reline or a new denture is better depends on its condition. We will look and explain the options. It can often be done quickly.
Can you repair a broken denture?
Many breaks can be repaired. Keep all the pieces, avoid gluing them yourself and contact us on WhatsApp. We will tell you what can be done and how long it is likely to take. Avoid using glue from home, as it can damage the denture and make a proper repair harder. If your denture breaks often, it may be time to check the fit or consider a new one.
What is the difference between a full and a partial denture?
A full denture replaces all the teeth in an arch. A partial denture replaces some teeth and is held by the remaining natural teeth. Your dentist will explain which suits you. Partial dentures can be made from acrylic, metal or flexible materials. Your dentist will explain the options and how each one feels and looks.
Will dentures change how I speak?
Some people notice a slight change for the first few days or weeks while the tongue and lips adjust. Reading aloud can help. If it does not settle, let us know so we can check the fit. Speaking slowly helps.
Should I sleep with my dentures in?
Many dentists suggest taking dentures out at night to rest the gums, but there are exceptions. Your dentist will give you guidance for your mouth and your denture. Keep dentures moist when they are out, for example in water or a denture-soaking solution, so they do not dry out or change shape.
Do you offer immediate dentures after an extraction?
An immediate denture is fitted on the day teeth are removed so you are not without teeth. It usually needs adjusting as the gums heal. Your dentist will explain whether this is suitable for you. A permanent denture may follow later.
I live in Tilbury or Stanford-le-Hope. Can I come to you?
Yes. Patients come to us from across Thurrock. We are on Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays RM16 6SE, with on-site parking outside, about 0.8 miles from Chafford Hundred station and 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30. Message us on WhatsApp if you have any questions.
Is there easy access for older patients?
The practice is on Drake Road with on-site parking outside. Tell us about any mobility needs when you book and we will do what we can to help. If you need extra time, a particular appointment slot or someone to come with you, just let us know. We are happy to go at your pace and explain each step clearly.
Can I book a denture appointment on a Saturday?
We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp and we will look for a time. Saturday slots are limited, so it helps to ask early. Weekday appointments are available from 8am, which some people find easier.
What is a cosmetic denture?
A denture designed with extra attention to how it looks: tooth shape, shade and the gum colour, so it suits your face and smile.
What is a conventional denture?
A standard full or partial denture made to replace missing teeth. It's one of the three main types we talk through, along with cosmetic and flexible dentures.
How many appointments does a new denture take?
Usually several: an assessment, impressions and measurements, a try-in so you can see your new teeth, then the fit and a review.
Can I see my new teeth before they're finished?
Yes. At the try-in you see and try your new teeth, and changes can be made before the denture is completed.
Will a new denture feel tight at first?
It can feel unfamiliar for a while, and small adjustments in the first weeks are normal. Tell us about any rubbing or sore spots.
Can you make my denture look like my old smile?
Old photos of your smile can help. Bring some to your appointment and we'll use them when designing your new teeth.
Can I have a partial denture if I still have some teeth?
Yes. Partial dentures replace some teeth, and flexible partial dentures can feel more comfortable than rigid plates for some people.
My denture is giving me a sore spot. What should I do?
Contact us so we can adjust it. Any mouth ulcer that hasn't healed within 3 weeks should be checked by a dentist or doctor.
I live in Stifford Clays or Orsett. Is the practice easy to reach for several visits?
Yes. Stifford Clays is about a mile away and Orsett about 3 miles, with on-site parking in front of the practice.
