AI-generatedHow it works
- Examination. We check the tooth, take X-rays if needed and explain the options, including fillings, crowns, bridges and implants.
- Preparation. The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and a scan or impression is taken. You leave with a temporary.
- Fitting. Your laboratory-made crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and shade, then cemented in place.
Crowns & Bridges: your questions answered
How much does a crown cost?
The fee depends on the tooth and the material. Your dentist confirms it in writing before treatment starts. Common options include porcelain, zirconia and metal-based crowns, which differ in cost, strength and appearance. You will know what is included, such as any temporary crown, before you decide whether to go ahead.
When is a crown needed instead of a filling?
When a tooth is badly broken or weakened, a crown can protect what is left. Your dentist will explain why they are recommending one. Crowns are often suggested for large fillings, cracked teeth or teeth that have had a root filling. Your dentist will show you what they see and explain other options where they exist.
Does having a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic during preparation. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles. If the tooth stays sensitive or your bite feels high once the crown is fitted, contact us so we can check it. A small adjustment is often all that is needed. Tell us when you book if you are nervous, and we will go at your pace.
How long does a crown last?
Crowns can last many years with good care, but they are not permanent. Cleaning well, check-ups and not using your teeth as tools all help. How long a crown lasts depends on your bite, habits such as grinding, and how well the gum around it is kept clean. A night guard may help if you grind.
What is a bridge?
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching false teeth to crowns on the neighbouring teeth. Bridges can be fixed in place, so you do not take them out. Your dentist will explain whether the teeth either side of the gap are strong enough to support a bridge, and what other options exist.
Bridge or implant: which is better for me?
It depends on the health of the neighbouring teeth, your gums and bone, and your preferences. We explain both at your consultation. Implants are not placed at our practice; if one may suit you, we arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician. Bridges and dentures are provided here, and we explain the pros and cons of each.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and one to fit the crown. A temporary crown is usually fitted between the two visits while the laboratory makes your final crown. Your dentist will explain how long this takes and how to look after the temporary crown in the meantime.
I have broken a tooth. What should I do?
Contact us as soon as you can. WhatsApp us to book on 07300 421405, or call 01375 481000. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Keep any broken pieces and avoid chewing on that side.
What is a dental crown?
A crown is a cap that covers a tooth to protect and strengthen it and improve its appearance. It is made to match the shape and shade of your teeth, usually in a dental laboratory. Crowns are used for broken, weakened or root-filled teeth.
What materials are crowns made from?
Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramics such as zirconia, metal or porcelain bonded to metal. Your dentist will explain the options for the tooth involved, balancing strength and appearance. Each material has pros and cons, for example in strength, appearance and how much tooth needs to be prepared.
Will I need a root canal before a crown?
Not always. A root filling is only needed if the nerve of the tooth is damaged or infected. Your dentist will check the tooth and explain whether one is needed before a crown. If one is needed, it is done first.
Will I have a temporary crown?
Usually, yes. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the laboratory makes the final crown. Your dentist will explain how to look after it in the meantime. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side while it is fitted. If the temporary crown comes off, keep it and contact us so we can refit it.
How do I look after a crown or bridge?
Brush and clean between your teeth daily, and use the cleaning aids your dentist or hygienist recommends to clean under a bridge. Regular check-ups help spot problems early. Your dentist will show you how to clean around and under a bridge, for example with floss threaders or small brushes.
Can a crown fall off?
Occasionally a crown can come loose. Keep it safe and contact us on WhatsApp. Do not try to glue it back yourself. We will see you and check the tooth. Keep the crown in a safe container and bring it with you to your appointment. If the tooth is sharp or painful, contact us as soon as you can.
What types of bridge are there?
A conventional bridge uses crowns on the teeth either side of a gap. An adhesive bridge is bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth. Your dentist will explain which suits your gap and teeth. Each type has its own pros and cons.
Do bridges damage the neighbouring teeth?
A conventional bridge involves preparing the neighbouring teeth for crowns, while an adhesive bridge needs little or no preparation. Your dentist will talk through the pros and cons of each for you. Preparing a tooth for a crown cannot be undone, so it makes most sense when the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings. Your dentist will check whether those teeth are healthy enough to support a bridge.
Can a crown be whitened?
No. Crowns do not change colour with whitening. If you plan to whiten, it is usually done first so the crown can be matched to your new shade. Your dentist will explain how long to wait after whitening before the shade is taken, as colour can settle for a short time.
Do crowns look natural?
Modern crowns can be matched closely to your other teeth in shade and shape. Your dentist will take a shade and discuss the look with you before the crown is made. You can see the shade guide before the crown is made. If you have plans to whiten, it is worth mentioning this first.

Can I book a crown appointment early in the day?
We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp with the times that suit you. Weekday appointments are available from 8am, which some people find easier before work. Saturday slots are limited, so it helps to ask early.
Can a crown be fitted in one visit?
Our crowns are made in a dental laboratory, so there are usually two visits: one to prepare the tooth and take a scan or impression, and one to fit the crown. You have a temporary in between.
How do I look after a temporary crown?
Avoid sticky or very hard food, chew on the other side where you can, and contact us if it comes loose or off.
Will my crown match my other teeth?
Yes. The shade is chosen to match your teeth. If you're planning whitening, do it first, because crowns don't change colour.
What is an adhesive bridge?
A bridge with a thin wing bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth, which usually needs less preparation than a conventional bridge. Your dentist explains whether it suits the gap.
Can a bridge replace more than one tooth?
Sometimes, depending on the gap and the strength of the supporting teeth. Your dentist checks with an examination and X-rays.
How do I clean under a bridge?
Use floss threaders or small interdental brushes under the false tooth every day. We'll show you how.
Can an old crown be replaced if the gum has shrunk back?
Yes. Replacing an old crown can improve how it looks where a dark edge shows at the gum. Your dentist checks the tooth underneath first.
Can a crown save a cracked tooth?
It depends on where the crack runs and how deep it goes. Your dentist assesses the tooth and explains the options.
I live in Grays (RM17). What if my crown comes off?
Keep the crown, don't glue it back yourself, and contact us early in the day. If it's painful, we can offer an emergency appointment. An emergency appointment is £120, which covers your consultation with a dentist, one X-ray and antibiotics if they're needed. A £40 holding deposit secures the slot and comes off the £120, so £80 is due on the day. Patients on our DPAS plan don't pay a deposit.
