What porcelain veneers can help with
- Teeth that are heavily stained and do not respond to whitening
- Chipped or broken front teeth
- Teeth that are uneven in size or shape
- Old veneers or bonding you would like replaced
Dr Basrai has trained in smile design with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and follows a conservative approach: where alignment, whitening or bonding can do the job with less tooth preparation, he will tell you.
Thinner, minimal-preparation veneers are sometimes possible. Whether a thin or standard veneer is right depends on your teeth, and your dentist will explain the options.

AI-generatedHow it works
- Smile consultation. We discuss what you would like and check your bite and gums. This is a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).
- Planning. We plan the shape and shade with you. Often a little enamel is prepared so the veneer sits naturally.
- Fitting. Your laboratory-made veneers are checked for fit and colour, then bonded in place at a second visit.
Porcelain Veneers: your questions answered
How much do porcelain veneers cost?
The fee depends on how many veneers you need and the work involved. Your dentist confirms it in writing after your consultation, before treatment starts. The plan explains what is included, such as preparation, temporary veneers and fitting visits, and you can take time to decide. Having a written fee first means there are no surprises later.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. We offer a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded). At the consultation your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and bite, talks about the changes you would like and explains whether veneers or more conservative options could help. You leave with a written plan and fee.
Do veneers damage natural teeth?
Most porcelain veneers need some enamel to be prepared, which cannot be undone. That is why we discuss more conservative options, such as aligners, whitening or bonding, first. Your dentist will explain how much preparation your teeth would need, so you can weigh up the options before deciding.
Can I have just one veneer?
Yes. A single veneer can be made to match the teeth next to it. Matching one tooth well is skilled work, so we plan the shade carefully. The colour of porcelain does not change after fitting, so if you are thinking about whitening the teeth around it, this is usually done first. Your dentist will talk this through with you.
How long do veneers last?
Porcelain is hard-wearing, but veneers can chip or need replacing over time. Good home care, check-ups and a night guard if you grind help protect them. Avoid using your teeth to open packets or bite very hard objects. Your dentist will explain how to look after them and what to do if one chips.
What is the difference between veneers and bonding?
Composite bonding is shaped directly on your teeth in one visit. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and fitted at a later visit. Your dentist will explain which suits your goals. Bonding is often quicker and easier to repair, while porcelain resists staining and wear more. Both options are explained at your consultation, alongside whitening and straightening.
How many visits will I need?
Usually a consultation, a preparation visit and a fitting visit. Your dentist will give you a timeline before you start. The laboratory usually needs a couple of weeks or more to make your veneers between the preparation and fitting visits. A review is often booked afterwards to check your bite and how the veneers feel.
Can veneers fix a broken front tooth?
Sometimes. It depends on how much tooth is left. A crown may be more suitable when more of the tooth is missing. If a tooth has had a root filling or is badly weakened, a crown may protect it better. Your dentist will check the tooth and explain the options.
What are porcelain veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells made in a dental laboratory and bonded to the front of teeth to change their colour, shape or length. They are usually used on the teeth that show when you smile. Veneers are planned around your face, bite and the health of your teeth and gums.
How much tooth is removed for veneers?
Veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel to be prepared so they sit naturally. The amount depends on your teeth and the change planned. Your dentist will explain this at your consultation, as tooth preparation cannot be reversed. In some cases little or no preparation is needed.
Are veneers reversible?
Because some tooth surface is usually prepared, porcelain veneers are generally regarded as a long-term commitment and may need replacing in future. Your dentist will discuss this, and other options such as bonding, before you decide. It is worth thinking this through before going ahead.
Do veneers look natural?
Porcelain can be matched in shade, shape and translucency to suit your face and the surrounding teeth. Your dentist plans the design with you so the result looks like your own teeth, only more even. You can bring photos of smiles you like.
Can veneers stain?
Porcelain resists staining better than composite, but the edges and your natural teeth can still pick up stain. Regular hygiene visits help keep them looking good. Avoiding smoking and rinsing after tea, coffee or red wine also helps keep the edges and the surrounding teeth looking good.
Can veneers come off?
Veneers are bonded firmly, but they can occasionally chip or come loose, for example after a knock or from biting hard objects. Keep the veneer and contact us on WhatsApp so we can see you. Do not try to glue it back yourself.
Can I have veneers if I grind my teeth?
Grinding puts extra force on porcelain. It does not always rule veneers out, but your dentist may suggest a night guard or a different approach. We look at your bite at your consultation. A night guard can help protect porcelain from grinding forces while you sleep.
Should I whiten before having veneers?
Often yes. Veneers are matched to the surrounding teeth and do not change colour afterwards, so many people whiten first and then match the veneers to the new shade. Your dentist will explain how long to wait between whitening and taking the shade for your veneers, as the colour can settle for a short time after whitening.
Do I need healthy gums for veneers?
Yes. Gum health is checked first, as inflamed gums can affect how veneers look and last. We may suggest a hygiene visit before treatment. Clean, healthy gums help the edges of veneers look neat and make them easier to keep clean afterwards. Your dentist will also show you how to clean around veneers so the gum line stays healthy.
Do you make temporary veneers while I wait?
Temporary veneers may be fitted while the laboratory makes your porcelain veneers, depending on how much preparation is needed. Your dentist will explain what to expect between visits. Temporary veneers are not as strong as porcelain, so it helps to take care with hard or sticky foods until your final veneers are fitted.

Can I start with a photo consultation?
Yes. You can send smile photos through our Send Us Your Smile page or on WhatsApp, and we will reply with an idea of the options. A face-to-face consultation is still needed before treatment is planned. Front and side photos in daylight help.
What's the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and bonded on at a later visit. Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth at the practice. Your dentist explains how each suits your teeth.
How many veneers do people usually have?
It depends on how many teeth show when you smile and what you'd like to change. Some people have one or two, others more. Your plan sets this out.
Can veneers close gaps?
Small gaps, often yes. For larger gaps, moving the teeth with aligners first may mean less tooth preparation.
Can veneers make crooked teeth look straight?
They can disguise mild unevenness, but aligners may straighten the teeth with no preparation at all. Dr Basrai will tell you where a less invasive option could do the job.
Do veneers need special cleaning?
No special products. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep up regular check-ups so the gums around them stay healthy.
Can I choose how white my veneers are?
Yes. You choose the shade with your dentist, aiming for a natural look that suits your face. If you'd like your other teeth lighter, whiten them first so everything matches.
Will veneers feel strange at first?
Your teeth may feel slightly different to your tongue for the first few days. This usually settles as you get used to them.
What happens if a porcelain veneer chips?
Small chips can sometimes be smoothed or repaired. A larger chip may mean replacing the veneer. Contact us and we'll check it.
Can I have a veneer on a tooth with a large filling?
Sometimes a crown suits a heavily filled tooth better. Your dentist checks the tooth and explains the options.
I live in Stanford-le-Hope or Corringham. How many trips will I need?
Usually a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit secures your slot, and it's taken off your treatment or refunded), a planning and preparation visit, and a fitting visit. Stanford-le-Hope is about 5 miles and Corringham about 6.5 miles away along the A13.
