Emergency Dentist: your questions answered

How much is an emergency dental appointment?

An emergency appointment costs £120. Any further treatment is explained and priced before it starts. At the appointment your dentist assesses the problem, explains what they find and, if needed, takes one X-ray and prescribes antibiotics, which the £120 covers. If more treatment is required, it is explained and confirmed in writing before it starts, so you can decide.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Contact us as early in the day as possible and we will offer the earliest appointment we have. Messaging us on WhatsApp with a short description of the problem helps us plan your visit.

Do I need to be a patient to book?

No. We see people who are not registered with us for emergency appointments. You can message us on WhatsApp on 07300 421405 or call 01375 481000. The emergency appointment costs £120, and any further treatment is explained and priced before it starts.

I have lost a crown. Is that an emergency?

It is not usually dangerous, but book in soon so the tooth can be protected. Keep the crown and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side, and do not try to glue the crown back yourself, as this can stop it fitting properly. If the tooth is painful or sharp, tell us when you get in touch.

I have chipped a front tooth. Can it be fixed?

Often yes, with bonding, a veneer or a crown, depending on the size of the chip. We will check the tooth first. Keep any broken piece of tooth and bring it with you. If the tooth is painful, sensitive or has a sharp edge, mention this when you get in touch so we can see you as soon as possible.

What if an adult tooth is knocked out?

Contact us immediately. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, and bring it with you. Do not scrub the tooth. Time matters, so contact us as soon as you can.

Where are you?

Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays RM16 6SE, with on-site parking. Chafford Hundred station is about 0.8 miles away. There is parking outside, and we are about 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30. Message us on WhatsApp before you set off so we can tell you when we can see you.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Common reasons to call include severe toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling, and bleeding that will not stop.

What should I do with a knocked-out adult tooth?

Contact us straight away. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Time matters, so do not delay. Bring the tooth with you. If you cannot put it back in its socket, keep it in milk or in your cheek, and do not scrub or dry it.

What if my face is swollen?

Contact us as soon as possible. Keep a note of when the swelling started and whether it is getting bigger. Swelling with a high temperature or feeling unwell should be checked promptly.

Can I take painkillers for toothache?

Follow the instructions on the packet and check with a pharmacist if you are unsure what is suitable for you. Painkillers do not treat the cause, so book an appointment. Never place painkillers against the gum or tooth, as this can burn the gum.

I have lost a filling. What should I do?

Contact us on WhatsApp to book. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side until you are seen. A lost filling can leave the tooth sensitive or sharp. Tell us if the tooth is painful, so we can see you as soon as possible and protect the tooth until it can be properly restored.

My child has a dental injury. Can you help?

Contact us straight away during opening hours and we will advise. Tell us how the injury happened and which teeth are affected. If your child has a head injury, has been knocked out or feels unwell, seek medical help straight away.

My wisdom tooth hurts. Is that an emergency?

Pain and swelling around a wisdom tooth can be worth checking promptly. Contact us to book. Wisdom teeth can cause problems when they do not have enough room to come through. Your dentist will check the area and explain the options.

Is the £120 fee for the whole treatment?

The £120 emergency appointment covers your consultation with a dentist, one X-ray and antibiotics if they're needed. Any further treatment is explained and confirmed in writing first. For example, a temporary filling may be placed to settle a tooth, with a permanent repair planned for a later visit.

Can I book an emergency appointment on WhatsApp?

Yes. Message us on 07300 421405 or call 01375 481000. During opening hours we aim to reply quickly. Include a short description of the problem, such as pain, swelling or a broken tooth, and when it started.

Is there parking if I am in pain?

We are on Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays RM16 6SE, with on-site parking outside, about 0.8 miles from Chafford Hundred station and 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30. Message us on WhatsApp before you set off if you need directions.

I am near Lakeside or West Thurrock. How long will it take to reach you?

We are a short drive from Lakeside and West Thurrock on Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, with on-site parking outside. Message us on WhatsApp before you set off so we can tell you when we can see you.

Are you open on Saturdays for emergencies?

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Saturday appointments are limited, so it helps to message us on WhatsApp as early as possible.

Do I pay a deposit for an emergency appointment?

Yes, unless you're on our DPAS plan. A £40 holding deposit secures the slot and comes off the £120 fee, so £80 is due on the day.

How do I pay the £40 deposit?

When we book you in on WhatsApp or by phone, we send you a secure payment link. Your slot is confirmed once it's paid.

Will I need antibiotics?

Only if your dentist decides they're needed. Most toothache isn't cured by antibiotics alone. If you do need them, they're covered by the £120 fee.

My tooth is sensitive to hot and cold. Is that an emergency?

Usually not urgent, but book a check. If the pain lingers, wakes you at night or comes with swelling, contact us sooner.

My denture has broken. Can you help?

Contact us and we'll advise. We offer a denture service through Changing Faces at the practice. Don't try to glue it yourself.

What happens at an emergency appointment?

Your dentist assesses the problem, takes an X-ray if needed and explains what they find. The aim is to get you comfortable, then plan any further treatment with fees in writing.

My temporary filling or crown has come out. What should I do?

Keep any crown, avoid chewing on that side and contact us to book. Don't glue it back yourself.

I live in South Ockendon or Purfleet. How quickly can I get to you?

South Ockendon is about 1.5 miles away and Purfleet about 3 miles, with on-site parking. Message us before you set off and we'll tell you when we can see you.

What should I tell you when I get in touch?

What happened and when, where the pain is, whether there's swelling and whether you have a temperature. This helps us plan your visit.

I have toothache at night. Should I wait until morning?

Contact us as early as you can in the morning.
