What dental implants can help with
- A single missing tooth
- Several missing teeth
- Loose dentures that need more support
- Comparing implants with bridges and dentures before you decide
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw to support a crown, bridge or denture. Implants are not right for everyone. Smoking, some medicines, gum disease and the amount of bone available can all affect suitability, which is why every plan starts with an assessment.
We do not place implants at our practice. What we do is help you understand your options, plan the next steps, and arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician if you decide an implant is right for you. We also offer bridges and a bespoke denture service through Changing Faces, so you can compare the options in one place.

- Consultation. We examine the area, discuss your medical history and talk through implants, bridges and dentures. This is a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).
- Planning and advice. If an implant could suit you, we explain what is involved, the likely number of visits and the costs, and answer your questions.
- Referral for placement. Implants are not placed at our practice. If you choose an implant, we arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician and share your records with your consent.
- Ongoing care with us. You keep seeing us for check-ups and hygiene, and if you prefer a bridge or a denture, we provide these at the practice.
Dental Implants: your questions answered
How much do dental implants cost?
Implant fees depend on how many teeth are being replaced and whether extra work is needed, and they are set by the implant clinician who places them. We explain the likely costs at your consultation, and fees for any bridge or denture we provide are confirmed in writing first.
Is the implant consultation free?
Yes. We offer a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded). At the consultation we look at the gap, your neighbouring teeth, gums and general health, and explain the options, including bridges and dentures. If an implant may suit you, we explain how placement is arranged with a trusted implant clinician.
Do you place implants at the practice?
No. Implants are not placed at Chafford Hundred Dental Care. We provide consultations, planning and advice, and if an implant suits you we arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician. You can carry on seeing us for check-ups and hygiene.
Am I suitable for dental implants?
Suitability depends on your general health, gum health and the bone in your jaw. Smoking and some medicines can make a difference. We look at this at your consultation and explain whether an implant is worth exploring further. Bridges and dentures are also discussed.
Does having an implant hurt?
Implants are usually placed under local anaesthetic, and some aching afterwards is common. The implant clinician explains what to expect and how to look after the area. We can talk this through with you at your consultation. Most people manage any aching with simple painkillers.
How long does implant treatment take?
An implant usually needs several months to bond with the bone before the final tooth is fitted. The implant clinician confirms the timescale for your case, and we can discuss a temporary option while you wait. Simpler cases can be quicker.
What are the alternatives to implants?
A bridge or a denture can also replace missing teeth, and we provide both at our practice. We explain the pros and cons of each so you can choose. A bridge is fixed to neighbouring teeth, while a denture is removable. Each option has advantages and limits, and the right choice depends on your teeth, gums, budget and preferences.
Can implants support a denture?
Yes, implants can be used to hold a denture more firmly. If your denture feels loose, ask about this at your consultation and we will explain the options. Implant-supported dentures are planned with the implant clinician, while we can help you understand the steps and look after your denture and gums in the meantime.
How do I look after an implant?
Clean around it daily as shown and attend regular check-ups, as gum problems around implants can affect how long they last. We can see you for check-ups and hygiene visits. Smoking and gum disease can increase the risk of problems around implants, so we talk about this openly and help you keep your gums healthy.
Who places the implant if I go ahead?
We arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician. We share your records with your consent and stay involved, so you are not left to find someone on your own. You can ask questions at every stage, and we can see you for check-ups, hygiene visits and ongoing care once your treatment is complete.
Why see you first instead of going straight to an implant clinic?
You get an independent look at all your options, including bridges and dentures, before you commit to anything. Some people find a bridge or denture suits them, and we provide those here. If an implant looks like a sensible option, we explain the next steps and arrange placement with a trusted implant clinician.
Will I need X-rays or a scan?
X-rays are often taken to check the area and the neighbouring teeth. The implant clinician may also need a 3D scan to plan placement. We explain what is likely for you at your consultation. X-rays help show the bone and roots.
Can I have an implant if I smoke?
Smoking can affect healing and the long-term health of the gum around an implant. It does not always rule an implant out, but it is something we discuss openly at your consultation. Stopping smoking can help healing after any dental treatment, and your GP or pharmacist can advise on support to stop.
Can I have an implant if I have gum disease?
Gum health usually needs to be stable before an implant is considered. We can check your gums and talk about hygiene care first, then look at the next steps. Bleeding gums or loose teeth are worth mentioning when you book, so there is time to check them properly. Keeping gums healthy also matters for any bridge or denture you may choose instead.
Is there an age limit for implants?
Implants are generally only considered once the jaw has finished growing. For older adults, general health and bone matter more than age. We look at this at your consultation. Some medical conditions and medicines can affect healing, so it helps to bring a list of what you take. We will talk through what this means for you in plain language.
How long do implants last?
With good cleaning and regular check-ups, implants can last many years, but no outcome can be promised and the crown on top may need replacing over time. We explain what affects this. Gum health around the implant matters, so good daily cleaning, not smoking and regular hygiene visits all help. Your implant clinician will also explain any reviews they recommend.
What happens if I wait to replace a missing tooth?
Over time neighbouring teeth can drift and the bone where the tooth was can shrink, which may change the options available. We can explain what we see in your mouth at your consultation. This does not mean you must act quickly, but it can help to understand the options early so you can plan.
Can you replace a tooth while I decide?
Often yes. A temporary denture or other short-term option may be possible while you think things through. We will explain what could work for you. A temporary option can help with appearance and confidence while you decide on a bridge, a denture or an implant. Your dentist will explain how it would fit and how to look after it.

What is a dental implant made of?
An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw. It supports a crown, bridge or denture on top.
How many teeth can implants replace?
One tooth, several teeth, or a whole arch by supporting a denture. Your consultation looks at what suits your mouth.
What's the difference between an implant and a bridge?
A bridge is fixed to the teeth either side of the gap. An implant is placed in the jaw and doesn't rely on neighbouring teeth. Each has pros and cons, which your dentist explains.
Can I have an implant years after losing a tooth?
Often, but the bone can shrink over time after a tooth is lost. X-rays or a scan show how much bone there is, and the plan takes this into account.
Will my records be shared with the implant clinician?
Only with your consent. If you choose an implant, we share the records needed with the trusted implant clinician who places it.
Can I keep seeing you for check-ups after an implant?
Yes. You keep seeing us for check-ups and hygiene, so we can look after your implant alongside your other teeth.
How do I clean around an implant?
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth with floss or small brushes, and keep up regular check-ups. Your dentist shows you the right tools for your mouth.
Can I have an implant if I have diabetes or another medical condition?
Some conditions and medicines can affect healing. Tell us your full medical history at your consultation and your dentist explains what it means for you.
What happens at the implant consultation?
We examine the area, discuss your medical history and talk through implants, bridges and dentures. It's a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit secures your slot, and it's taken off your treatment or refunded).
