What clear aligners can help with
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Teeth that have moved since earlier braces
- Some bite issues, such as crossbite, deep bite and open bite, depending on your assessment
Clear aligners have replaced several older straightening systems that patients in Thurrock may remember, including six-month braces, clear-step style aligners and spring aligners. Today we plan every case digitally, so you can see the expected result before you commit.
Treatment is dentist-led from start to finish. You see the same team at each review, on Drake Road with parking outside.

AI-generatedHow it works
- Assessment. We look at your teeth, take photos and talk about what you would like to change. This is a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).
- Digital scan and plan. If aligners look suitable, we take X-rays and a digital 3D scan instead of putty impressions, then show you a 3D plan of the expected tooth movement.
- Your aligners. You wear a series of custom aligners every day and change them at home, usually every 1–2 weeks as directed.
- Reviews and retainers. We see you roughly every 4–6 weeks to check progress. When treatment ends you wear retainers to hold your teeth in place.
Questions to ask any aligner provider
Clear aligners are offered by high-street practices, national networks and online companies. Whoever you choose, these questions help you compare like with like:
- Who is my dentist, and will I see them in person? At our practice you see the same dentist-led team at each review.
- Will my teeth and gums be checked first? We examine you and take X-rays where needed before any scan or plan.
- What does the fee include? Ask about scans, aligners, attachments, IPR, review visits, refinements and retainers. We set this out in writing before you start.
- How often will I be reviewed? We usually see you roughly every 4–6 weeks.
- What happens if my teeth do not track as planned? Ask how refinements are handled and whether they cost extra.
- What happens after treatment? Ask about retainers and how long you will be followed up.
We are happy to answer all of these at your consultation, which is free (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).

Clear Aligners: your questions answered
How much do clear aligners cost in Grays?
Clear aligner treatment at Chafford Hundred Dental Care starts from £1,995. Your exact fee depends on your teeth and is confirmed in writing after your consultation, before anything starts. The written plan sets out what is included, such as your aligners, review visits and retainers, so you can compare it clearly with any other quote you have.
Is the first consultation free?
Yes. We offer a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded). At this visit we check whether aligners could suit you and answer your questions. You can bring a list of questions, and there is no obligation to go ahead on the day.
Am I suitable for clear aligners?
Many adults with crowded, gapped or mildly misaligned teeth are suitable. Your gums and teeth need to be healthy first. A consultation with photos and a digital scan is the only way to know. If you have gum problems or decay, these are usually treated before straightening begins.
Do you offer Invisalign®?
Yes. Invisalign® treatment at our practice is £4K. That includes an examination and oral cancer screening with a GDC-registered dentist before treatment starts, all necessary X-rays and scans, one hygiene visit, 2 sets of retainers at the end of treatment and a professional home whitening kit. Your dentist will explain which option fits your teeth at your consultation, and confirms your plan and fee in writing before anything starts. Different aligner systems work in a similar way, using a series of clear trays made from a digital scan. What matters most is that the plan suits your teeth and is reviewed regularly.
How long does treatment take?
It varies from person to person. Your digital plan gives an estimated timescale before you start, and we review progress roughly every 4–6 weeks. Simpler cases can be shorter, while more crowding or bite changes usually take longer. Wearing your aligners for the advised hours each day helps keep treatment on track.
Will people notice I am wearing aligners?
Aligners are clear and thin, so most people will not notice them in day-to-day conversation. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be used on some teeth. Attachments are small bumps of tooth-coloured material that help the aligners grip and move teeth. They are polished off at the end of treatment.
Can I eat and drink normally?
You take your aligners out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush and put them back in. Your dentist will explain how many hours a day to wear them. Sugary or coloured drinks can sit against your teeth under the trays, which is why plain water is usually advised while they are in.
Do aligners hurt?
Most people feel some pressure for a day or two after switching to a new aligner. There are no brackets or wires. Any discomfort usually eases as you get used to each new set. If an aligner edge rubs your gum or tongue, contact us so we can check it.
What happens after treatment?
You wear retainers to keep your teeth in their new position. Your dentist will explain how and when to wear them. Teeth can move back towards their old position without retainers, so they are an important part of the plan. We also see you for check-ups to make sure everything stays healthy.
I live in Upminster or Brentwood. Is it worth the trip?
Many reviews are short visits, and the practice has on-site parking about 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30. Your dentist will tell you how many visits your plan needs before you start. Many reviews are quick, and some can be planned for times that fit with work or school runs. You can message us on WhatsApp before booking if you would like to check anything.
How many hours a day do I need to wear aligners?
Aligners only work while they are in, so most plans ask for around 22 hours a day, taking them out to eat, drink anything other than water and brush. Your dentist will tell you the wear time for your plan and check at each review that things are on track.
Can I straighten just my top or bottom teeth?
Sometimes. Treating one arch can work when the other arch is already well aligned and your bite allows it. Whether it suits you depends on how your top and bottom teeth meet, so your dentist checks this at your consultation and explains the options before you decide.
What does the fee cover?
Your written plan sets out exactly what is included before you start, such as your scan, aligners, review visits and retainers. Ask us anything that is not clear. Nothing starts until you have the plan and fee in writing and are happy to go ahead.
What are attachments?
Attachments are small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip and move them. Not everyone needs them. They are removed and the teeth polished at the end of treatment. Your dentist will show you where they would go on your 3D plan.
Is IPR needed, and what is it?
IPR (interproximal reduction) means gently polishing a small amount of enamel between some teeth to create space. It is not needed for everyone. If your plan includes it, your dentist explains why, where and how much before you agree to treatment.
How is a dentist-led plan different from at-home aligner kits?
With dentist-led treatment you have an examination, X-rays where needed and a digital scan before anything is made, and you are seen in person for reviews. Problems such as gum disease or decay are picked up first. Ask any provider who your dentist is and how often you will be seen.
Can I have aligners if I have crowns, veneers or fillings?
Often yes. Aligners can still move teeth that have crowns or fillings, though attachments may need a different approach on some surfaces. Your dentist will look at your existing dental work at your consultation and explain anything that could affect your plan.
Am I too old for clear aligners?
There is no upper age limit as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. Many adults straighten their teeth in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. Your dentist will check your gum health and bone support at your consultation.
What happens if I lose or break an aligner?
Contact us on WhatsApp as soon as possible. Depending on where you are in your plan, you may be asked to move to your next aligner or go back to your previous one while a replacement is arranged. Keep your old aligners in their case for this reason.
Do I need to wear retainers for ever?
Teeth can drift after any straightening, so retainers are part of keeping your result. Your dentist will explain how often to wear them, which usually reduces over time to night-time wear, and how to look after them. Retainers can be removable or fixed behind the teeth.
Can I whiten my teeth during or after aligner treatment?
Many people whiten once their aligners are finished, and some plans use the trays for whitening. Your dentist will explain the right timing for you, as attachments and any planned bonding can affect when whitening makes sense. Whitening gel on unhealthy gums or teeth can cause discomfort, so a check is needed first.
Can I book an aligner review on a Saturday?
We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp with the times that suit you and we will try to fit reviews around work or school runs. Saturday slots are limited, so it helps to ask early.
What's the difference between Invisalign® and Chafford Aligners?
Both are clear, removable aligners planned from a digital scan and supervised by our dentists. Invisalign® treatment is £4K, including an examination and oral cancer screening, X-rays and scans, one hygiene visit, 2 sets of retainers and a home whitening kit. Chafford Aligners is from £1,995 with retainers and a home whitening kit.
Is Smile Tweak a clear aligner option too?
Yes. Smile Tweak is £995 for up to 5 aligners on one arch, for minor cases such as a little crowding or a tooth that has moved. Your dentist checks it suits you first.
My teeth moved after braces as a teenager. Can aligners help?
Teeth that have moved back after earlier braces are one of the most common reasons people ask about aligners. Whether they suit you is decided at a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit secures your slot, and it's taken off your treatment or refunded).
Do I need to see an orthodontist instead?
Many everyday cases are treated with dentist-led aligners. If your bite or jaw needs specialist orthodontic care, your dentist will explain your options and can refer you.
Can I have aligners if I have gum disease or decay?
Those need treating first, because teeth should only be moved when teeth and gums are healthy. Your dentist checks this before any scan or plan.
Will aligners affect my speech?
Some people notice a slight change in how they say certain sounds for the first few days. For most people this settles as they get used to the aligners.
How do I clean my aligners?
Rinse them when you take them out, brush them gently with cool water and keep them in their case. Brush your teeth before you put them back in. Your dentist gives you full instructions.
Can I drink tea or coffee with aligners in?
Take your aligners out for anything other than water, then brush or rinse before putting them back. This helps stop staining and keeps sugar off your teeth.
Do you use a scanner instead of putty impressions?
Yes. We take a digital 3D scan with an intraoral scanner, then show you a 3D plan of the expected tooth movement before you commit.
I live in South Ockendon or Purfleet. How often would I need to visit?
Reviews are typically every 4 to 6 weeks. South Ockendon is about 1.5 miles away (one stop by c2c from Ockendon) and Purfleet about 3 miles, with on-site parking.
