What composite bonding can help with
- Chipped or worn front edges
- Small gaps between teeth
- Teeth that look uneven in length or shape
- Some marks or patches of discolouration
Dr Basrai calls bonding the “C” in his ABC of Dentistry: Alignment, Bleaching and Composite bonding. The idea is simple: keep as much natural tooth as possible, and only add what is needed.
You may have heard it called cosmetic contouring. It is the same idea, done with modern composite materials.

AI-generatedHow it works
- Smile consultation. We talk about what you would like to change and check your teeth and gums are healthy. This is a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded).
- Shade matching. We choose a composite shade to match your teeth. Many people whiten first, because composite does not change colour with whitening.
- Shaping and polishing. The composite is applied in layers, shaped by hand, set with a light and polished. Many cases are finished in one visit.
Composite Bonding: your questions answered
How much does composite bonding cost?
The fee depends on how many teeth are involved and how much shaping is needed. Your dentist confirms your fee in writing after your consultation, before treatment starts. The plan sets out how many teeth are included and what the result is expected to look like. You can take the written fee away and decide in your own time, with no pressure to book on the day.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. We offer a free consultation (a £20 holding deposit is taken when you book, then taken off your treatment or refunded). At the consultation your dentist looks at your teeth and gums, talks about what you would like to change and explains whether bonding, whitening or straightening could help. You leave with a written plan and fee.
Does composite bonding damage my teeth?
Bonding usually needs little or no removal of natural tooth. Your dentist will explain exactly what your plan involves. In most cases the tooth surface is lightly roughened so the composite can bond, and the material is then added and shaped. Because so little tooth is involved, bonding is often seen as a conservative option compared with veneers or crowns.
How long does bonding last?
Composite can chip, stain or wear over time and may need polishing, repair or replacement. Looking after it well and attending check-ups helps it last. How long bonding lasts varies with your bite, habits such as nail biting, and what you eat and drink. Your dentist can polish or repair small chips at a later visit, often without starting again.
Can I whiten my teeth after bonding?
Composite does not lighten with whitening, so if you want whiter teeth it is usually done first. Your dentist will plan the order with you. This way the composite can be matched to your new, lighter shade. If you whiten later, the bonding may look darker than the teeth around it and may need to be redone.
Does it hurt?
Most bonding needs no injections because little or no tooth is removed. Tell us if you are nervous and we will go at your pace. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a short time afterwards. You can ask to take breaks during the appointment, and your dentist will explain each step before starting.
How many appointments will I need?
Many cases are completed in one visit after your consultation. Larger cases may be split over two visits. Bonding is built up layer by layer in the chair, so the time needed depends on how many teeth are being treated. Your dentist will tell you how long to allow and whether a review visit is needed.
Is bonding the same as veneers?
No. Bonding is built up directly on your teeth in the chair. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and fitted at a later visit. We explain both at your consultation. Bonding is usually quicker and involves less tooth preparation, while porcelain is more resistant to staining and wear.
Can bonding close a gap?
Small gaps can often be closed with bonding. Larger gaps or crowding may be better treated with clear aligners first. Bonding adds material to the sides of teeth, so it can make teeth look wider if a gap is large. Your dentist will explain what is realistic for your smile at your consultation.
Can bonding fix a chipped tooth from an accident?
Often, yes, depending on the size of the chip. If a lot of tooth is missing, a crown or veneer may be more suitable. If the tooth is painful, book an emergency appointment. Keep any broken piece of tooth and bring it with you, as it can sometimes help with planning.
Is bonding suitable if I grind my teeth?
Grinding can chip or wear bonding faster. Your dentist will check for wear and may suggest a night guard to protect your teeth. Grinding does not always rule bonding out. The dentist looks at how your teeth meet and whether there are signs of wear, then explains the options so you can decide what suits you.
What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that is shaped onto your teeth and hardened with a light. It can change the shape or edges of teeth, close small gaps or cover chips, often in one visit and usually without removing healthy tooth structure.
Is composite bonding permanent?
It is long-lasting but not permanent. Composite can chip, wear or pick up stains over the years, and edges may need polishing or repair. It can usually be repaired or replaced without major work. Your dentist will explain what to expect for your teeth.
Will bonding stain?
Composite can pick up surface stains from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking more than natural enamel. Regular hygiene visits and polishing help. Bonding does not respond to whitening, which is why whitening is often done first. Rinsing with water after coloured drinks can help.
Can composite bonding be removed?
In many cases, yes. Because little or no tooth is usually removed, bonding can often be polished off or replaced later. Your dentist will tell you at your consultation whether this applies to your teeth. If enamel was shaped, this is explained before treatment.
Can I eat normally after bonding?
Most people can eat normally the same day. It helps to take care with very hard foods and habits such as biting nails or pens, which can chip composite. Your dentist will give you aftercare guidance. Night guards may be advised if you grind.
Is bonding suitable for crooked teeth?
Bonding can disguise mild unevenness, but it does not move teeth. Where teeth are crowded or rotated, straightening first with aligners can give a more even base for bonding. Your dentist will explain both routes at your consultation. Bonding alone may suit milder cases.
Do I need a check-up before bonding?
Yes. Teeth and gums need to be healthy before cosmetic work, so we check for decay and gum problems first. If you are not a registered patient, we can arrange an examination before your bonding visit. This helps your bonding last.
I live in Grays. Where is the practice?
We are on Drake Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays RM16 6SE, with on-site parking outside, about 0.8 miles from Chafford Hundred station and 1.5 miles from M25 Junction 30. Many patients from Grays and Little Thurrock come to us for bonding.
Can I send photos before booking a bonding consultation?
Yes. You can send smile photos through our Send Us Your Smile page or on WhatsApp, and we will reply with an idea of the options. A face-to-face consultation is still needed before any treatment is planned. Front and side photos in daylight are helpful.
How do I look after bonded teeth?
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep up regular check-ups. Avoid biting nails, pens or hard objects with bonded edges.
Can bonding be repaired if it chips?
Usually, yes. Composite can often be added to or repaired, which is one advantage of bonding.
Should I straighten my teeth before bonding?
Sometimes. Dr Basrai's ABC approach puts alignment first where it helps, because straighter teeth can need less composite. Smile Tweak (£995, up to 5 aligners on one arch) can suit minor cases.
Can I have bonding on just one tooth?
Yes. Bonding can be done on a single tooth, for example to repair a chip, and the shade is matched to the teeth around it.
Can bonding cover a dark tooth?
Sometimes. It depends on how dark the tooth is and why. Whitening, a veneer or a crown may suit better, and your dentist explains the options.
Will I need an injection for bonding?
Often not, because bonding usually needs little or no drilling. Your dentist tells you beforehand if anaesthetic is needed.
Is composite bonding the same as Smile Tweak?
No. Bonding reshapes teeth with composite. Smile Tweak moves teeth with clear aligners. Some people have both, aligning first and bonding after.
I work in Lakeside or West Thurrock. Can I fit bonding around work?
Many bonding cases are finished in one visit after your free consultation (a £20 holding deposit secures your slot, and it's taken off your treatment or refunded). We're about 1.5 miles from West Thurrock with on-site parking.
