Children's Dentistry: your questions answered
When should my child first see a dentist?
Bringing children in early, even to a parent’s appointment, helps them get used to the dentist. Your dentist can advise on timing for your child. Early visits are usually short and relaxed, and help your child see the dentist as a normal part of looking after their teeth. They also give you a chance to ask about brushing, teething and diet.
How can I prepare my child for their visit?
Keep it positive and simple. Let us know in advance if your child is nervous. Try not to use words like hurt or pain, and avoid sharing your own worries about the dentist. Reading a simple book about visiting the dentist or playing at counting teeth at home can help. Bringing a favourite toy can also be comforting.
What happens at a child’s check-up?
We check how the teeth are developing, look for decay and talk about brushing and diet. X-rays are only taken if needed. We also look at how the teeth and bite are developing and answer your questions. Visits are kept short and friendly, and we explain things in simple words so your child knows what is happening.
Can you tell if my child will need braces?
We can spot early signs that orthodontic treatment may be worth considering later, and explain your options. Early signs can include crowding, a bite that does not meet evenly or teeth coming through in an unusual position. If a specialist opinion might help, we explain when it may be worth looking into and what the next steps would be.
Do you have baby-changing facilities?
Yes, the practice has baby-changing facilities. There is also on-site parking outside, which can make visits with young children easier. Tell us when you book if you need anything else, such as extra time or a particular appointment slot, and we will help where we can.
How much is a child’s appointment?
Please ask our team when you book, and we will confirm the fee before the visit. The fee depends on the type of appointment and any treatment needed. If anything further is recommended, we explain it and confirm the fee in writing before it starts, so you can decide.
Can I bring my child to my own appointment?
Many parents bring children along to their own check-ups so the surgery feels familiar. Let us know when you book so we can plan the time. Watching a parent have a check-up can help children see that it is nothing to worry about.
Can we book a family appointment?
Yes. Where possible we can book family members one after another. Message us on WhatsApp with the times that suit you. Back-to-back appointments can save time and help younger children feel settled, as they see other family members being seen first. Saturday slots are limited, so it helps to ask early.
What if my child is nervous?
Tell us when you book. We keep the first visits relaxed, explain things in simple words and go at your child's pace. Short, positive first visits help build confidence over time. You can stay with your child, and they can sit on your lap if that helps. We never rush, and we can stop at any point.
How often should my child see the dentist?
Your dentist will recommend an interval based on your child's teeth. Many children are seen every six to twelve months. Children with a higher risk of decay may be seen more often. Regular visits help spot problems early and give you a chance to ask about brushing, toothpaste and diet.
When do baby teeth usually come through?
Baby teeth usually start to appear from around six months, though timing varies. Your dentist can check how your child's teeth are coming through at a check-up. Teething can make some babies unsettled, and most children have all their baby teeth by around age three. Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears.
When do adult teeth come through?
Adult teeth usually start to come through from around age six, often starting with the back molars and lower front teeth. Timing varies from child to child. Baby teeth usually loosen and fall out as adult teeth come through, and most children have their adult teeth, apart from wisdom teeth, by their early teens.
Should I worry if a baby tooth is knocked out?
Contact us for advice during opening hours. We can check the area, the gums and the teeth around it, and talk you through what happens next. Do not try to put a baby tooth back in.
What should I do if an adult tooth is knocked out?
This is urgent. See our emergency dentist page and contact us straight away. If you can, find the tooth and handle it by the crown, not the root. Do not scrub it. Time matters, so do not delay getting advice.
Do you offer fissure sealants?
Ask us at your child's check-up. Your dentist will explain whether any preventive treatment is appropriate. Fissure sealants are a thin coating that can be painted onto the grooves of back teeth to help protect them from decay. Not every child needs them, and your dentist will explain whether they could help your child.
Can you check whether my child might need braces?
We look at how the teeth and bite are developing at check-ups and can explain if a specialist opinion might be worth considering. Early advice can help you plan ahead, even if treatment is not needed straight away, and many children are simply monitored at check-ups for a while.

Which toothpaste should my child use?
Use a fluoride toothpaste. Under-3s need just a smear, and 3 to 6-year-olds a pea-sized amount. Your dentist can advise on the right strength for your child's age.
How can I protect my child's teeth from sugar?
Keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes, offer water or milk between meals and avoid sugary drinks at bedtime.
What is fluoride varnish?
A protective coating painted onto the teeth to help prevent decay. Your dentist tells you whether it's recommended for your child.
My child grinds their teeth at night. Should I worry?
It's common in children and often stops as they grow. Mention it at their check-up so the dentist can look for any wear.
Does thumb-sucking or a dummy affect teeth?
Long-term thumb-sucking or dummy use can affect how the teeth and bite develop. Your dentist can check and give you tips on helping your child stop.
Until what age should I help my child brush?
Most children need help or supervision until about 7. Brushing last thing at night is the most important time.
What should I do if my child has toothache?
Contact us as early in the day as you can and we'll offer the earliest appointment we have.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Dental X-rays use a very low dose, and we take them only if needed.
How can I make brushing fun for my child?
Let them choose their own toothbrush, use a two-minute song or timer, and brush together so they can copy you. Praise goes a long way.
